If you haven't played Cave Story, then you are missing out on one hell of an awesome game. It's a Metroidvania indie title, but what sets it apart is the fact that it was developed by one person over the course of 5 years. Meaning he not only programed the game, he also made the artwork, the characters, the story, and the music. You can easily get this game on PC or Mac, but the game has had numerous re-releases since then and if you want to show your support for Pixel, you can buy the game if you're interested. (It's still available as a freeware game)
